**“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)**
Life is full of transitions. We all face moments where we need to leave something behind—a job, a relationship, or even a mindset—and step into something new. Moving on can be difficult, especially when we are emotionally attached to the past. However, one of the most powerful lessons we can learn in our walk with Christ is to move forward without looking back.
The story of Lot’s wife in Genesis 19 is a reminder of the dangers of dwelling in the past. As God was rescuing Lot’s family from the destruction of Sodom, He gave them one simple instruction: *“Don’t look back.”* But Lot’s wife couldn’t resist. She turned back and was immediately turned into a pillar of salt. This powerful moment teaches us that when God calls us to move forward, holding on to the past can prevent us from stepping into the future He has prepared for us.
Letting Go of What Was
Letting go isn’t always easy. We often cling to our past because it’s familiar. The unknown can feel frightening, but God reassures us that He is with us every step of the way. Philippians 3:13-14 encourages us, *“Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”*
We can’t change what’s happened, but we can decide how to respond. By letting go, we free ourselves from the burden of regret and make room for God’s new blessings.
Embracing the New
In Isaiah 43:18-19, God says, *“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”* God is always at work, creating new opportunities and possibilities for us. When we hold on to the past, we miss out on what He is doing right now.
Embracing the new requires trust—trust that God’s plans are good, trust that He will provide, and trust that He knows what’s best for us. Often, we’re afraid of the new because we feel unprepared. But 2 Corinthians 5:17 reminds us that *“If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”* We are constantly being renewed and transformed by God’s grace.
Moving Forward with Confidence
Moving on doesn’t mean we forget the lessons we’ve learned. It means we take those lessons with us as we step into the future. Proverbs 4:25-27 says, *“Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.”* When we keep our focus on where God is leading us, we can move forward with confidence, knowing that He is guiding our steps.
Moving on is an act of faith. It’s trusting that God has something better in store for us, even when we can’t see it yet. The journey forward may not always be easy, but with God’s strength, we can face it without fear. Remember the words of Isaiah 41:10, *“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”*
